Марк Бернес (1911–1969) was a Soviet actor and pop singer born in Nizhyn, Ukraine. He was awarded the title of People's Artist of the RSFSR and a first-class Stalin Prize laureate. Бернес was a key figure in the Soviet pop scene of the 1950s and 1960s, performing songs that became part of the golden fund of Russian classical music. His most famous compositions include "Тёмная ночь" and "Журавли" which remain popular today. Марк Бернес made a significant contribution to the development of the Russian chanson genre and Soviet pop music.
