Burzum is a Norwegian musical project founded by Varg Vikernes in 1991. The band's name is taken from J.R.R. Tolkien's The Lord of the Rings trilogy and translates as "darkness" in Black Speech, Tolkien's fictional language. Burzum became a key figure in the black metal genre, releasing albums such as "Hvis lyset tar oss" and "Filosofem" The band's music combines atmospheric and minimalist elements, which has had a significant influence on the development of the genre. Despite Varg Vikernes's controversial reputation, Burzum remains an important figure in the history of extreme music.
