Александр Галич (real name Александр Аронович Гинзбург ) was a Soviet poet, screenwriter, playwright, and singer-songwriter, born in 1918 in the USSR. Early in his career, he became famous as the author of plays and screenplays for popular films. In the 1960s, Галич began performing his own songs, which were distinguished by their socially charged themes and quickly gained popularity among the intelligentsia. His works were distributed on tape recordings, despite censorship. Галич is considered one of the three greatest exponents of the art song genre in the Soviet Union, along with Булатом Окуджавой and Владимиром Высоцким . His work had a significant influence on the rethinking of Soviet reality.
