Fu una notte di neve

Una notte che intorno

Ci sono gli elfi e i nani;

Una notte che nel porto

Di Malmoe stridevano

Forte i gabbiani:

La notte che mio padre

Ammazzava il maiale

Ed eravamo in tanti

Che per la prima volta

Nella mia vita vidi

I commedianti

Avevo dodici anni

Un bastone per le oche

Nessuna ragazza:

Mi sembraron giganti

Sollevati dal suolo

Nel fondo della piazza;

E come per incanto

Sparirono le case

Sparì tutta la gente;

E fu come se al mondo

A parte io e loro

Non ci fosse più niente…

Li avrei seguiti allora

Li avrei seguiti ovunque

Li avrei seguiti in capo al mondo

Ma ero soltanto un bambino

E non potevo fare di più;

Si persero nel buio

Si persero nella notte

Nella voce di mia madre

Che mi gridava di tornare indietro

E non sarei tornato più

Perchè chiudevano il tempo

In una scatola d’oro

E non so cosa avrei dato

Per partire con loro

Li rividi da uomo

Che era appena finita

La guerra dei trent’anni;

Preparano il palco

La sera per la festa

Di San Giovanni:

Di quand’ero ragazzo

La stessa emozione

It was a snowy night
