Metsatöll is an Estonian folk metal band founded in 1998. The band's name comes from an ancient Estonian euphemism for wolf. Metsatöll makes extensive use of traditional instruments in their music, and their lyrics often address the 13th and 14th-century wars of independence. The band is known for its cover versions of Estonian folk songs, as well as compositions based on poems by renowned poets such as August Alle and Friedrich Kreutzwald. Metsatöll has made a significant contribution to the popularization of folk metal, combining traditional Estonian culture with a heavy sound.
