В уголке, за занавесками

Юный клоун в парике

Грим кладёт мазками резкими

И рыдает сам в тоске.

Нет её, с другим ласкается,

Нет её, ушла с другим.

Клоун плачет, надрывается,

Не ложится даже грим.

Цирк шумит, гудит, смеётся,

Гул несётся сверху вниз.

И могуче раздаётся:

«Рыжий, браво!

Браво!

Бис!..»

Вот под крышей, на трапеции

Клоун крутит колесо

И хохочет по инерции,

Сам же думает о том —

Нет её, с другим ласкается,

Нет её, душа болит,

Клоун лихо кувыркается,

Но сорвавшись вдруг летит…

Цирк шумит, гудит, смеётся,

Гул несётся сверху вниз.

И могуче раздаётся:

«Рыжий, браво!

Браво!

Бис!..»

На простой доске товарищи,

Тоже в гриме, как и он,

На конюшню из игралища

Молча вытащили вон.

Клоун бледен, озирается,

Смерть витает уж над ним.

Нет её, с другим ласкается,

Страстно, знойно, но — с другим!..

Цирк шумит, гудит, смеётся,

Гул несётся сверху вниз.

И могуче раздаётся:

«Рыжий, браво!

Браво!

Бис!..»

In the corner, behind the curtains

Young clown in a wig

Grim puts sharp strokes

And he cries himself in anguish.

She is not there, she caresses with another,

She is gone, she left with someone else.

The clown is crying

Even makeup doesn't fit.

The circus is making noise, buzzing, laughing,

The hum rushes from top to bottom.

Here under the roof, on the trapeze

The clown spins the wheel

And laughs out of inertia,

He himself thinks about it -

She is not there, she caresses with another,
