El llit de fusta s’ha quedat sol,

l’home s’aixeca i espera

la llet bullida que es beu d’un glop,

i amb afany esmola l’eina.

des del matí fins al final.

la fusta vella tallar-la cal.

Amb el sarró i amb el gos ja vell

travessa el bosc cada tarda,

i en el seu front d’arrugada pell

la neu s’hi posa gelada.

Van caient arbres i, quan és fosc,

pensa en la seva mainada,

no vol que passin la vida al bosc

com l’ha passada el seu pare.

Pensa en la dona i el temps passat,

i la destral ja li cansa.

Al cap dels anys, també s’ha tallat

tot el seu bosc d’esperances.
