Когда б мы жили без затей,

Я нарожала бы детей

От всех, кого любила —

Всех видов и мастей.

И, гладя головы птенцов,

Я вспоминала б их отцов,

Одних — отцов семейства,

Других — совсем юнцов.

Их не коснулась бы нужда,

Междоусобная вражда —

Уж слишком были б непохожи

Птенцы того гнезда.

Мудрец научит дурака,

Как надо жить наверняка.

Дурак пускай научит брата

Вкушать, как жизнь сладка.

Сестра-простушка учит прясть.

Сестра-воровка учит красть.

Сестра-монашка их научит

Молиться, чтобы не пропасть.

Когда б я сделалась стара,

Вокруг накрытого стола

Всю дюжину моих потомков

Однажды б собрала.

Как непохож на брата брат,

Но как увидеть брата рад!

И то, что эти братья схожи,

Дороже во сто крат.

Когда б мы жили без затей,

Я нарожала бы детей

От всех, кого любила —

Всех видов и мастей.

When we lived without any fuss,

I would give birth to children

From everyone you loved -

All types and stripes.

And, stroking the heads of the chicks,

I would remember their fathers,

Some are the fathers of the family,

Others are quite young.

Need would not touch them,

Internecine strife -

They would be too dissimilar

The chicks of that nest.

A wise man teaches a fool

How to live for sure.

Let the fool teach his brother

Taste how sweet life is.

A simple sister teaches to spin.

Sister-thief teaches to steal.

The nun sister will teach them

Pray not to fall.

When I become old

Around the set table

All a dozen of my descendants

One day I would collect.

How unlike a brother is a brother,

But how glad I am to see my brother!

And the fact that these brothers are similar

A hundred times more expensive.
