Chasing shadows off the doorway

There was night terrors in your arms

I woke with a yell and you asked if I was okay

I said there was no reason to be alarmed

Now there’s a raccoon turf fight in the backyard

And their battle cries are keeping us awake

We start laughing, trying to figure what they are

Trying to say

Well I’m gonna take a guess

They’ll take what they can get

Now I’ve forgotten about God for a long time

Or should I say that she has forgotten me

Every day I am the asshole in the spotlight

So your shadow is comforting

That night you said you should’ve started running

Well me, I didn’t have the good sense

Or maybe I would’ve seen this coming

But I’m not giving up yet

Though I’ll take what I can get

Drinking all night at the hotel

Two days straight without sleep

And gee, your laughter was seductive

Your eyes glazed in a minor key

Now it’s been so long since I had a place to call home

I’ve been wandering for some decade

My values were abruptly disowned

I was a writer with not much left to say

And I have not recovered yet

But I’ll take what I can get

You’ve been injured by the evils of the business

Thinking maybe you don’t have the stomach for it yet

And you surrender by such greed and ugliness

That shit is hard to forget

I’d heard you were a talented performer

You said you’d heard my songs on the internet

Saying my words made you want to cash in and surrender

It was such a strange compliment

But I’ll take what I can get
