
Мстислав Ростропович (1927–2007) was a prominent Soviet and Russian cellist, pianist, conductor, and composer. Born in the USSR, he became a People's Artist of the USSR and the recipient of numerous prestigious awards, including the Lenin Prize, the Stalin Prize, Second Class, and five Грэмми Awards. His wife, Галина Вишневская , was also a People's Artist of the USSR. In 1974, he emigrated abroad, and in 1978, he was stripped of his Soviet citizenship, which was restored in 1990. Ростропович made an enormous contribution to world and contemporary classical music, performing and popularizing masterpieces of world music.
