
Jesse Winchester (1944–2014) was an American-Canadian musician and songwriter born in the southern United States. In 1967, he emigrated to Canada to avoid conscription during the Vietnam War and began a career as a solo artist. His best-known songs include "Yankee Lady" (1970) and "Say What" (1981). In 1973, he received Canadian citizenship, and after receiving amnesty in the United States in 1977, he returned to Memphis, Tennessee, in 2002. Jesse Winchester left a significant mark on the country and rock genres, combining lyricism and melody.
