
Hugh Masekela (1939–2018) was a South African trumpeter, flugelhornist, cornetist, singer, and composer, called the "father of South African jazz." Born in South Africa, he became known for his jazz compositions and anti-apartheid songs, including "Soweto Blues" and "Bring Him Back Home" In 1968, his version of "Grazing in the Grass" reached number one on the US charts. Masekela collaborated with numerous renowned musicians and actively advocated for social change through music. His work had a significant influence on the development of jazz and African music.
