Guru , real name Keith Edward Elam, was an American MC born on July 17, 1961. He is best known as a member of the hip-hop duo Gang Starr , which he co-founded with DJ Premier . The name Guru is a backronym for Gifted Unlimited Rhymes Universal and can also mean God is Universal; he is the Ruler of Universal. In addition to his work in Gang Starr , he released a series of solo albums under the name Jazzmatazz , which combined rap with jazz. His contributions to the development of hip-hop and his experimentation with genres made him a key figure in the history of music.
