Ходят кони над рекою,

ищут кони водопою,

А к речке не идут

— больно берег крут.

Ни ложбиночки пологой,

ни тропиночки убогой.

А как же коням быть?

Кони хочут пить.

Вот и прыгнул конь буланый

с этой кручи окаянной.

А синяя река

больно глубока.

Horses go over the river

looking for watering horses,

But they don't go to the river

— painfully steep coast.

Not a shallow hollow,

not a poor path.

But what about horses?

The horses are thirsty.

So the buckskin horse jumped

from this accursed steep.

And the blue river

painfully deep.
