Kohtasin Kotkan tiellä ruusun

Matkallani etelään

Kauniin vaan puolikuolleen ruusun

Jospa sen saisin elämään

Sateita luokse saattelin

Kuohkean mullan kumosin se juurelle turhaan

Niin pois kuihtui, lakastui

Rannalla viiden vuolaan virran

Haukkoi kala henkeään

Kulki vain siima läpi rinnan

Suomusti kirjokylkeään

Solmut verkoista selvitin

Siimat hampailla hamusin

Vaan jälleen niin turhaan, silmistä valo katoaa

Sateet saapuvat varjot mukanaan

Hetken huuhtovat, varjot katoaa

Kunpa voisin jäädä, hengähtää

Neula kompassin osoittaa vain…

Eteenpäin Kotkan tietä jatkoin

Neulan suuntaa seuraten

Hetkeksi iltatähteen katsoin

Pyysi luokseen viittoen

«Et ruusuja saa kukkimaan

Kaloja kanssas kulkemaan

Se työtä on turhaa, täällä vain varjot lankeaa»
