In meeresblauer Weite, ein Schiff der Wellen Spiel,

die Buddel macht die Runde, weil einer von uns fiel,

es war ein kurzes Leben, doch frei und selbst bestimmt,

als keines Mannes Sklave, gehorcht nur See und Wind,

als sie nach uns gejagt, vor Anker lag das Schiff,

Soldaten kamen viele, doch brachen sie uns nicht.

Auf die Zeiten, die vergangen,

auf die MEnschen, die da waren,

auf das, was sie uns genommen,

und auf das, was wir uns nahmen.

Ihr Herren solltet wissen, dass niemand uns bestimmt,

das Schicksal wird entscheiden, wie lang das Feuer glimmt,

wenn ihr uns auch hetzt und wenn ihr uns das Leben nehmt,

niemals wird’s geschehen, dass wir Greise die gezähmt,

und dem der jetzt gegangen, wir singen ihm dafür,
