An einem Grabe - Leichenwetter

Er sehnte sich nach Ruhe, Stille, Nacht,

Wir wissen nur, daß er ein Leid verbarg

Und müde war.

Wir haben ihn im Sarg

Gebettet und zum stillsten Ort gebracht.

Ihn birgt und Schützt die tiefe Grube nun

Vor Welt und Zeit.

Da soll der müde Mann

Sein Weh vergessen und in Frieden ruhn.

Wohl ihm, der dieser bittren Zeit entrann!

Uns andern bleibt vom Lärm und Krieg der Welt

Von ihrer Todesangst und blutigen Not

Noch unser Teil, und Leid ist unser Brot,

Bis auch für uns der bange Traum zerschellt.

Dann wird, so glauben wir, das Gleichgewicht,

Der Wert und Sinn der Welt uns wieder tagen,

Es wird des Menschen Bildnis wieder licht

Und wird des Vaters ewige Züge tragen.

He longed for rest, silence, night,

We only know that he hid a sorrow

And was tired.

We have him in the coffin

Bedded and taken to the quietest place.

The deep pit now holds and protects him

Before the world and time.

Here goes the tired man

Forget his woe and rest in peace.

Blessed is he who escaped this bitter time!

The rest of us are left with the noise and war of the world

From their fear of death and bloody distress

Nor our portion, and sorrow is our bread,

Until the anxious dream shatters for us too.

Then, we believe, the equilibrium

The value and meaning of the world meet us again,

The image of man becomes light again

And will bear the father's eternal features.
