Ich ging hinaus zum Haselstrauch

Ein Feuer war in meinem Haupt

Ich schnitt mir eine Angel draus

Und ging so in die Nacht hinaus

Als der Mond die Sterne sah

Ging ich zum Fluss, der silbern war

Fing einen Fisch, wie Mondlicht klar

Mit meinem dunklen Haselstab

Ein Feuer war in meinem Haupt

Nun muss ich jede Nacht hol’n

Der Sonne goldene Äpfel

Und die silbernen des Mondes

Im Mondlicht wollt ich meinen Fang

Vom Tal nach Hause tragen

Da hörte ich den Wind im Gras

Meinen Namen sagen

Vor mir stand im Ufergras

Ein Jüngling schön und wunderbar

Mit Apfelblüten in dem Haar

Den ich schon oft im Traume sah

Ein Feuer war in meinem Haupt

Nun muss ich jede Nacht hol’n

Der Sonne goldene Äpfel

Und die silbernen des Mondes

Er sah mich an und ich vergaß

Das grüne Tal und um mich war

Mit einem Mal ein tiefer Schlaf

Den ich bisher nicht enden sah

Mit Haselstab, wo Äpfel blüh'n

Und hoff' wenn Mondlicht auf mich fällt

Den Jüngling dort, vom Fluss zu seh’n
