Jahrtausendalt - faun

Ich sah ein Knaben spielen, von Eschenholz sein Bogen war

Ich sah ihn eben zielen, als schon sein Pfeil entflogen war

Ein Falken hört ich schreien, wild warf er sich ins Blau hinauf

Er konnt' sich nicht befreien, denn mit ihm strieg das Grauen auf

Durch seines Fanges Wehren der Pfeil sich wildzersplittert bog

Und neben ihm im Leeren der Jubelschrei des Jungen flog.-

Ich hört die Schreie beid' und wußte nicht, wer heller klang

Ob, der aus wildem Leid' dem grauen Raubgesellen sprang

Ob der aus wilder Wonn' der Knabenbrust heraus entschlalt, —

Sie flogen beid' zur Sonn' und waren beid' jahrtausendalt

I saw a boy playing, his bow was of ash wood

I saw him aim just as his arrow flew away

I hear a hawk scream, wildly he threw himself up into the blue

He couldn't free himself because horror rose with him

Through the defense of his catch the arrow bent wildly splintered

And next to him in the void the boy's jubilant cry flew.-

I heard both screams and didn't know which sounded louder

Ob, who jumped from wild sorrow to the gray thief

Whether he unburdens the boy's breast out of wild delight, —

They both flew to the sun and were both thousands of years old
