Es hat der Sturm geheult die Nacht

Da meine Mutter mich zur Welt gebracht

Es hat gepfiffen, gejauchzet der Wind:

«Mir gehört das Kind»

Die heimatlose Straße sprach:

«Ich bin die Wiege drauf er lag

Und heimatlos wie ich so soll er sein

Mein, das Kind ist mein!»

Die Welle rauschte an der Straße her

Sie rauschte leise vom fernen Meer

Und in das Rauschen klangs wie Worte dann:

«Ich dein Kind gewann»

Drum bin ich wie der Wind, der droben zieht

Bin wie die Welle, die der Hand entflieht

Die Straße drängt und sehnt sich fort von hier

Fort, fort, fort, das gilt auch mir!

The storm howled in the night

Since my mother gave birth to me

It whistled, the wind cheered:

"I own the child"

The homeless street spoke:

«I am the cradle on which he lay

And homeless like me so he should be

Mine, the child is mine!"

The wave rushed along the road

She rustled softly from the distant sea

And then in the noise it sounded like words:

"I won your child"

Therefore I am like the wind that blows above

Am like the wave escaping the hand

The street pushes and longs away from here

Away, away, away, that applies to me too!
