I gatti sono animali strani

Divini e magici per gli egiziani

Son laureati in filosofia

E l’egoismo è loro gran virtù

La confidenza non la danno a nessuno

E se del caso azzannano la mano

La notte in loro scorre come un fiume

E in uno scatto non ci sono più

Poi escono di colpo dalle tenebre

Come fa di tra le quinte un attore celebre

Son pronti a sguainare gli unghielli crudeli

Come le tigri, lontani parenti infedeli

Passeggiano tra i libri e sulle nuvole

Ed hanno parti attive nelle favole

Tra streghe e maghi con sussiego girano

E snobbano chi dice che non amano

Sì, certamente sono narcisisti

E traditori più di quanto basta

Atteggiamenti c’hanno, vescovili

E sanguinari cuori, mai servili

E molto strabica hanno la coscienza

Un occhio guarda il cuoco all’apparenza

Poi mentre fanno finta di dormire

L’altr’occhio osserva dove sta il ragù

Ma se dovessi dar fiducia al prossimo

Oppure a questo ingannatore massimo

Mi fiderei dell’animale esotico

Almeno so ciò che mi attenderà

 Cats are strange animals

Divine and magical for the Egyptians

They have degrees in philosophy

And selfishness is their great virtue

They don't give confidence to anyone

And if necessary, they bite the hand

The night in them flows like a river

And in one click they are gone

Then they suddenly come out of the darkness

Like a famous actor does behind the scenes

They are ready to unsheathe their cruel claws

Like tigers, distant unfaithful relatives

They walk among the books and on the clouds

And they have active parts in fairy tales

Among witches and wizards they walk around with pride

And they snub anyone who says they don't love

Yes, they certainly are narcissists

And traitors more than just enough

They have episcopal attitudes

And bloody hearts, never serve them

They have a conscience very cross-eyed

An eye watches the outwardly cook

Then while they pretend to sleep

The other eye observes where the ragù is

But if I had to trust neighbors

Or to this maximum deceiver

I would trust the exotic animal

At least I know what will await me
