Ein Jeder hat es doch gesehen

Wie es sich mit uns verhält

Wir sind ohne jeden Zweifel

Vermählt vor Gott und dieser Welt

Wie kann sie sich nur erdreisten

Mit dem Rücken zugewandt

Mir so deutlich mitzuteilen

Sie wünscht sich in ein fernes Land

Ein Jeder muß vermessen finden

Wie sie sich mir abgewandt

Das ist doch zu unmanierlich

Wie sie einfach so verschwand

In dieser mir so schweren Stunde

Wird höh'res Glück nur ihr zuteil

Hier nur werden ird’sche Dinge

Sorgen für mein Seelenheil

Stetig fromm war doch mein Leben

Nein, ich dachte an mich nicht

Nur für das Geliebte streben

Halte ich für meine Pflicht

So viel Leid, Zwist und Kummer

Mußten einfach aus der Welt

Niemals war ich wirklich frei

Ihr gehörte alles Geld

Auf ihre leise Diskretion

Habe ich gar sehr gebaut

Nun wird es niemand je erfahren

Denn bleich und kalt ist ihre Haut

How she turned away from me

That's too unmannerly

How she just disappeared like that

In this difficult hour for me

Only her will have better luck

Here only earthly things become

Concern for my salvation

My life was always pious

No, I wasn't thinking of myself

Strive only for the beloved

I consider it my duty

So much suffering, strife and grief

Just had to get out of the world

I was never truly free

All the money was hers

To her quiet discretion

I built a lot

Now nobody will ever know

Because her skin is pale and cold
