Coppelius is a Berlin-based band performing epic metal featuring drums, double bass, cello, and clarinet. Formed in 1997, the band rose to prominence on September 28, 2002, performing at the farewell concert The Inchtabokatables . The musicians claim to hail from the 18th century, a legend they maintain in interviews and on their official website, which features fictional archives. Coppelius concerts are distinguished by a unique atmosphere: the musicians perform in period costumes, with a footman and absinthe, and the audience often adapts to the style, replacing the traditional "Zugabe!" with "Da Capo!". Coppelius contributed to the development of the genre by combining metal with classical instruments.
