
R.E.M. is an American rock band formed in Athens, Georgia, in 1980 by Michael Stipe, Peter Buck, Mike Mills, and Bill Berry. Known for their influence on alternative rock, the band gained early attention with their melodic guitar sound and distinctive vocals. Their first single, "Radio Free Europe", was released in 1981 on the independent label Hib-Tone. The debut album, "Murmur" (1983), received critical acclaim. Over their career, they released iconic hits like "Losing My Religion" and "Everybody Hurts". R.E.M. disbanded in 2011, leaving a lasting legacy in alternative music.
