Mary Lou Williams (full name Mary Elfrieda Scruggs ) is an American jazz pianist, composer, and arranger, born May 8, 1910, in the United States. A child prodigy, she began playing the piano at an early age. During her career Mary Lou Williams wrote and arranged hundreds of compositions and recorded over 100 records. Her work spanned traditional jazz and blues, and she collaborated with such prominent musicians as Duke Ellington and Benny Goodman . Mary Lou Williams made a significant contribution to the development of jazz, remaining one of the few women to achieve recognition in the genre.
