
Lynyrd Skynyrd is an American rock band formed in 1964 in Jacksonville, Florida. Known as pioneers of Southern rock, the group initially performed under names like My Backyard, The Noble Five, and One Percent before adopting their iconic name in 1969, inspired by a high school gym teacher, Leonard Skinner. Their hits, including "Sweet Home Alabama" and "Free Bird", became anthems of the 1970s. The band’s career was tragically interrupted in 1977 by a plane crash that claimed several members. Lynyrd Skynyrd remains a defining influence in rock history, celebrated for their contributions to the Southern rock genre.
