John Illsley is a British musician born in 1949, best known as the bass guitarist for Dire Straits . He was a founding member of the band, which achieved worldwide success with hits such as "Sultans of Swing" and "Money for Nothing" By the time the band broke up in 1995 John Illsley was the only remaining original member besides frontman Mark Knopfler . In addition to his work with Dire Straits , he has released seven studio and two live solo albums, continuing to contribute to the development of rock music. His work has had a significant influence on rock and pop music.
