
Gil Scott-Heron (1949–2011) was an American-born poet and musician. He rose to prominence in the 1970s and '80s as a spoken word artist. His work, created in collaboration with Brian Jackson , was a synthesis of jazz, blues, and soul. His albums "Pieces of a Man" and "Winter in America" explored social and political themes, and his performance style ranged from recitative to melismatic vocals. He had a significant influence on the development of hip-hop and neo- Gil Scott-Heron , becoming a key figure in African-American musical culture.
