The group was founded by musicians from the Parus restaurant in Leningrad, located on a landing stage on the Neva, at the initiative of collector Сергея Маклакова . Legend has it that Александр Кавлелашвили was one of the founders. The group's name derives from its leader Николаем Резановым , whom his friends nicknamed "Pearl Michel" because of his pearl turtleneck. The ensemble performed chanson songs, becoming one of the most prominent representatives of this genre in the USSR. Братья Жемчужные made a significant contribution to the development of Soviet chanson.
