Vom Podest aus seh‘ ich euch dort voll Erwartung steh‘n

Kann unverhohl‘ne Gier nach Blut in euren Blicken seh‘n

Als Verbrecher soll ich hängen soll bezahl‘n für meine Tat

Und ihr schreit mir euren Hass entgegen

Heute werd ich fliegen der Galgenvogel sein

Werd mich sanft im Winde wiegen — von euch befrei‘n

Der Henker legt mir ungestüm die Fügel um‘s Genick

So fliege ich vor euch davon getragen von dem Strick

Plünderei und Diebstahl erstochen und erstickt

Manche meiner Missetaten kamen nie ans Licht

Überfall und Raubmord malten mein Gesicht

Auf Gesuche landesweit nur fingen sie mich nicht

Doch die Reize einer Frau ließen meine Vorsicht fahren

Und sie fanden mich noch auf ihr liegend

Drum werd ich heut‘ fliegen der Galgenvogel sein…

Des Henkers Hand umgreift den Schaft

Die Falltür kracht der Strick sich strafft

Die Schaulust wurd‘ gesättigt doch satt seid ihr nicht lang

Schon morgen fliegt der nächste Tor empor an seinem Strang

Heut bin ich geflogen als Galgenvogel frei

Wurde sanft im Wind gewogen — nun bin ich frei

Gespannt sind meine Schwingen gen Himmel fällt mein Blick

So fliege ich vor euch davon getragen von dem Strick

As a criminal I should hang and pay for my deed

Today I will fly the gallows bird

The executioner impetuously wraps his wings around my neck

So I fly away from you, carried by the rope

pillage and theft stabbed and choked

Some of my misdeeds never came to light

Assault and robbery murder painted my face

They just didn't catch me when I went nationwide

But the charms of a woman let go of my caution

And they found me still lying on her

That's why I'll fly today, be the gallows bird...

The executioner's hand grips the shaft

The trapdoor cracks and the rope tightens

The curiosity has been satisfied, but you are not full for long

Tomorrow the next gate will fly up on its line

Today I flew free as a gallows bird

Was gently cradled in the wind — now I am free

Excited are my wings towards the sky falls my gaze
