Hear the song in the holler

Hear them rattling chains

Hear the child that follows

Hear her calling its name

You ought to be sleeping

For she might come to your windowpane

Her eyes are hard to follow

Her face is bloody red

She’ll come through your window

And stand before your bed

To see if you are her baby

She’ll pull the blanket from your head

She’ll sit beside you

And sing to you her song

Her lips will open

But no sound will come

And in the silence

She’ll sing to you till dawn
