Du kommst aus der Schule nach Haus'

Und ganz genauso sah ich aus

Wenn ich ganz schlechte Karten hatte!

Du druckst rum, und du windest dich —

Wenn ich so durch die Gegend schlich

Dann war das meistens wegen Mathe!

Natürlich ist mir das nicht recht

Nur andrerseits steht es mir schlecht

Zu zetern, hab' ich denn vergessen

Was ich für Noten heimgebracht

Und Strafarbeiten ich gemacht

Hab', und was hab' ich nachgesessen?

Ich will dir helfen, wenn ich kann!

Du schreibst, ich seh' dir wortlos zu —

Ich saß dort, ganz genau wie du

Und musste mich genauso quälen!

Es ist noch gar nicht so lang' her

Da fiel es mir genauso schwer

Drei und vier zusammenzuzählen!

«Schlaf nicht ein, streng dich doch mal an!»

Ich hör' mich selbst und denk' daran:

Was macht es schon in einem Leben

Ob man «Vater» mit zwei «t» schreibt

Bei zehn durch zwei was übrigbleibt

Und wieviel zwei mal vier ergeben?

Und nun fängt alles das noch mal von vorne an —

Ich will dir helfen, wenn ich kann!

Ich kenne diesen fernen Blick

Das stille Gähnen, jeden Trick

Hellwach und strebsam auszusehen

Und dabei, in Gedanken weit

Fort, auf den Traumflügeln der Zeit

Manch' Abenteuer zu bestehen!

«Sag mal, wo bist du eigentlich?

Hör auf zu träumen!», das sag' ich

Der schlief bis zum Pausengeläute!

Hatt' ich die schönsten Träume nicht

Immer im Englischunterricht —

Sind sie nicht all mein Reichtum heute?

Und nun fängt alles das noch mal von vorne an —

Ich will dir helfen, wenn ich kann!

Es ist, als würd' ich draußen steh’n

Uns beide durch ein Fenster seh’n

Hör' meine Stimme aus der Ferne

Als ob ich selbst zur Schule geh'

Und noch einmal das ABC

Das «Einmaleins» mühevoll lerne

Und ich seh' mich beim Bleistiftkau’n

Abwesend aus dem Fenster schau’n!

Von nun an kenn' ich beide Seiten —

Ich würde gern auf deiner steh’n

Alles nicht so verkniffen seh’n

Und dich ein Stück des Wegs begleiten!

Then it was mostly because of math!

Of course I don't like that

On the other hand, it suits me badly

I forgot to complain

What grades I brought home

And detentions I made

Have, and what have I eaten?

You write, I watch you without a word —

I sat there just like you

And had to torture me the same way!

It's not that long ago

It was just as difficult for me then

Putting three and four together!

"Don't fall asleep, make an effort!"

I hear myself and think about it:

What does it matter in a life

Whether you write "father" with two "t".

At ten divided by two what's left

And how much are two times four?

And now it all starts all over again —

I want to help you if I can!

I know that distant look

The silent yawn, every trick

To look wide awake and ambitious

And at the same time, far away in thought

Away, on the dream wings of time

Many an adventure to survive!

«Tell me, where are you?

Stop dreaming!», that's what I say

He slept until the bell rang!

Didn't I have the most beautiful dreams

Always in English class —

Aren't they all my wealth today?

And now it all starts all over again —

I want to help you if I can!

It's like I'm standing outside

See us both through a window

Hear my voice from afar

As if I go to school myself

And once again the ABC

Learn the "multiples" with difficulty

And I see myself chewing a pencil

Absently look out the window!

From now on I know both sides —

I would like to stand on yours

Don't see everything so pinched

And accompany you part of the way!
