Nanga Parbat - Reinhard Mey

Da steigen zwei hoch in die steinerne Wand

Überm Abgrund gehen sie den steilen Pfad

Verlassen den sicheren Unterstand

Auf schimmerndem Eis, auf dem schroffen Grat

Aufeinander von Kindheit an eingeschwor’n steigen

Sie sicher und ohne ein Zögern bergan

In der eisigen, dünnen Luft, sie schweigen —

Wie oft haben sie das gemeinsam getan!

Dem Gipfel entgegen ohne ein Seil

Zwischen beiden gespannt ist ein Lebensband:

Am Berg ist der eine des anderen Teil

Zwei Brüder, der eine des and’ren Hand

Und unten im Lager steh’n stumm vor den Zelten

Ratlos die Gefährten und starren gebannt

Zu den zwei winz’gen Punkten in den eisigen Welten

Und die Ferngläser fliegen von Hand zu Hand

Hatten sie nicht gestern gemeinsam beschlossen

Mit dem Aufstieg zu warten, wenn der Himmel aufreißt?

Doch wer hat die rote Leuchtkugel verschossen

Die den beiden dort oben Schlechtwetter verheißt?

Da war das verabredete Lichtsignal

Das ankündigt, daß das Wetter umschlägt!

Gleißend, feuerrot schießt es auf aus dem Tal —

Alles Für alles Wider ist längst abgewägt

Also müssen sie heut noch den Gipfel erreichen

Durch beißende Kälte, durch bitterste Qual

Jetzt warten, das hieße die Fahne streichen

Absteigen und scheitern, bleibt da eine Wahl?

Mit keuchendem Atem, die Glieder wie Blei

Höhenkrank, wie im Wahn: Nur noch ein Gletscherfeld

Noch ein Eisüberhang, ein letzter Grat und die zwei

Fall’n sich stumm in den Arm auf dem Dach der Welt!

Zu Tode erschöpft, den Gipfel bezwungen!

Stille, Zeitlupe, Rückblende: Zwei kleine Jungen

Zieh’n die Handschuhe aus, geben sich die Hand

Wie als Kinder, wie nach ihrer ersten Wand

Ein Handschuh fällt auf das ewige Eis

Sie türmen Steine darauf: Der bleibt hier als Beweis!

So krönt ein Steinmann ihr Lebenswerk

Auf dem Nanga Parbat, dem Nackten Berg!

Das Abendrot am Firmament verrät

Eine sternklare Nacht, schnell bricht sie herein

Es ist spät für den Abstieg — ist es zu spät?

Eh es dunkel wird müssen sie weit tiefer sein!

Auf dem Aufstiegsweg zurück?

Kein Gedanke!

Zu schwer für die Erschöpften, unbegehbar bei Nacht

Es bleibt nur die Flucht durch die Diamirflanke

Und die Hoffnung, daß sie nach Westen abflacht

Die Angst kommt und lähmende Lethargie

Das Verhängnis wird ihnen Schritt für Schritt klar

Ausgehungert und ausgedörrt irren sie

In die Ungewißheit, in die sich’re Gefahr

Jetzt gilt nur, sich irgendwie abwärts zu tasten

Der einzige Ausweg ist der Weg voraus

In der feindlichen Höhe nicht ausruh’n, nicht rasten

Nur noch irgendwie aus der Todeszone heraus!

Oder einfach nur in die Dunkelheit fallen

Und liegen bleiben, sich einfach nicht rühr'n

Der Atem sinkt nieder in Eiskristallen

In Wimpern und Brau’n, nur die Kälte nicht spür'n!

Da steigen zwei auf in die steinerne Wand

Und einer kehrt heim, hat die Füße erfror’n

Vom Schnee blind die Augen, das Gesicht ist verbrannt

Hat in der Lawine den Bruder verlor’n

Zwei haben den Gipfel der Gipfel erklommen

Den höchsten Triumph und die höchste Qual

Nur einer alleine ist wiedergekommen

Verzweifelt, gebrochen im tiefsten Tal

Da kommt einer heim aus der steinernen Wand

Ein Schatten nur von jenem anderen Teil

Der im Dunkel im ewigen Eis verschwand

Und wird er je gesund, wird er doch nie mehr heil

There two climb up into the stone wall

Over the abyss they go the steep path

Leaving the safe shelter

On shimmering ice, on the rugged ridge

Committed to each other since childhood

You climb safely and without hesitation

In the icy, thin air, they are silent—

How often have they done this together!

Towards the summit without a rope

A bond of life stretches between the two:

On the mountain is one part of the other

Two brothers, one holding the other's hand

And down in the camp they stand silently in front of the tents

The companions are helpless and stare spellbound

To the two tiny dots in the icy worlds

And the binoculars fly from hand to hand

Didn't they decide together yesterday?

Waiting to climb when the sky clears?

But who shot the red flare?

Which promises bad weather for the two up there?

There was the agreed light signal

Announcing that the weather is about to change!

Glistening, fire-red it shoots up from the valley —

Everything for everything against has long been weighed up

So they still have to reach the summit today

Through biting cold, through the most bitter agony

Wait now, that would mean dropping the flag

Get off and fail, is there a choice?

With gasping breath, limbs like lead

Altitude sickness, as if in madness: Only one more glacier field

Another ice overhang, one last ridge and the two

Fall in each other's arms on the roof of the world!

Exhausted to death, conquered the summit!

Silence, slow motion, flashback: Two little boys

Take off the gloves, shake hands

Like when they were kids, like after their first wall

A glove falls on the eternal ice

They pile stones on it: it stays here as proof!

This is how a cairn crowns her life's work

On the Nanga Parbat, the Naked Mountain!

The sunset in the firmament reveals

A starry night, it falls quickly

It's late for the descent—is it too late?

Before it gets dark they have to be much deeper!

Back on the way up?

No thought!

Too heavy for the weary, impassable at night

All that remains is to escape through the Diamir flank

And the hope that it flattens west

Fear comes and crippling lethargy

Fate becomes clear to them step by step

Famished and parched, they err

Into uncertainty, to certain danger

The only thing now is to feel your way down somehow

The only way out is the way ahead

Don't rest in enemy heights, don't rest

Only somehow out of the death zone!

Or just fall into the dark

And lie down, just don't move

The breath sinks down in ice crystals

In eyelashes and brows, just don't feel the cold!

Then two climb up into the stone wall

And someone comes home with frozen feet

The eyes are blind from the snow, the face is burned

Lost his brother in the avalanche

Two have scaled the peak of peaks

The supreme triumph and the supreme torment

Only one came back alone

Desperate, broken in the deepest valley

There's someone coming home from the stone wall

A shadow only of that other part

Who disappeared in the dark in the eternal ice

And if he ever recovers, he will never recover
