Kein Dutzend Atemzüge alt

Und hattest doch so viel Gewalt

Und alle Macht über mein Leben

So lang' schon deinen Platz darin

Und du vermochtest, ihm den Sinn

Zu nehmen oder neu zu geben

Noch nie zuvor im Leben war

Mir unsere Ohnmacht so klar —

Wir können nur hoffen und bangen

Da stehen wir hilflos herum

Und taugen zu nichts, als nur stumm

Dies Geschenk dankbar zu empfangen

So hielt ich dich, sie war vollbracht

Die lange Reise durch die Nacht

Vom hellen Ursprung aller Dinge

Hab' ich geweint, oder gelacht?

Es war, als ob um uns ganz sacht

Ein Schicksalshauch durchs Zimmer ginge

Da konnte ich die Welt versteh’n

Dem Leben in die Karten seh’n

Und war ein Teil der Schöpfungsstunde

Einmal im Leben sah ich weit

Hin über unsre Winzigkeit

In die endlose Weltenrunde

Never been before in life

Our powerlessness so clear to me —

To receive this gift gratefully

That's how I held you, it was done

The long journey through the night

Of the bright origin of all things

Did I cry or laugh?

It was as if all around us

A breath of fate went through the room

Then I could understand the world

Look at life's cards

And was part of the hour of creation

Once in my life I saw far

Over our tinyness

Into the endless round of the world
