Bedenkt, dass jetzt um diese Zeit

Der Mond die Stadt erreicht —

Für eine kleine Ewigkeit

Sein Milchgebiss uns zeigt!

Bedenkt, dass hinter ihm ein Himmel ist

Den man nicht definieren kann —

Vielleicht kommt jetzt um diese Zeit

Ein Mensch dort oben an!

Und umgekehrt wird jetzt vielleicht

Ein Träumer in die Welt gesetzt

Und manche Mutter hat erfahren

Dass ihre Kinder nicht die besten waren!

Bedenkt auch, dass ihr Wasser habt und Brot

Dass Unglück auf der Straße droht

Für die, die weder Tisch noch Stühle haben

Und mit der Not die Tugend auch begraben!

Bedenkt, dass mancher sich betrinkt

Weil ihm das Leben nicht gelingt

Dass mancher lacht, weil er nicht weinen kann —

Dem einen sieht man’s an, dem andern nicht!

Bedenkt, wie schnell man oft ein Urteil spricht

Und dass gefoltert wird, das sollt ihr auch bedenken!

Gewiss ein heißes Eisen, ich wollte niemand kränken —

Doch werden Bajonette jetzt gezählt und wenn eins fehlt

Es könnte einen Menschen retten

Der jetzt um diese Zeit in eurer Mitte sitzt

Von Gleichgesinnten noch geschützt!

Wenn ihr dies alles wollt bedenken

Dann will ich gern den Hut, den ich nicht habe, schwenken!

Die Frage ist, soll’n wir sie lieben, diese Welt —

Soll’n wir sie lieben?

Ich möchte sagen: Wir woll’n es üben!
