Alles ist gut —

Für ein paar Stunden neigt sich Frieden über uns’ren Meridian

Alles ist gut —

Was heut' gescheh’n sollte, geschah, und was zu tun war, ist getan

Für eine kleine Weile ist’s, als gäb es weder Hass noch Neid

Als verginge alles Böse, alle Ungerechtigkeit

Im Dunkel des endlosen Raumes

Und für die Dauer eines Traumes

Ist’s, als ob alle Zwietracht ruht —

Für kurze Zeit erlöst die Nacht den Kranken von seinem Leid

Alles ist gut —

Und schließt die Augen dem Betrübten über alle Traurigkeit

Und dem Verzweifelten, der ohne Trost und ohne Hoffnung ist

Schenkt die Erschöpfung doch Vergessen, wenigstens für kurze Frist

Und der Verfolgte ist geborgen

In Dunkelheit, die bis zum Morgen

Den Mantel schützend um ihn tut —

Nimmt alle Last für ein paar Stunden

What was supposed to happen today happened, and what had to be done is done

For a little while it's like there's no hate or envy

As if all evil, all injustice, would pass away

In the darkness of endless space

And for the duration of a dream

Is it as if all discord rests—

For a short time, the night relieves the sick man of his suffering

And close the eyes of the afflicted over all sadness

And the desperate who is without comfort and without hope

Exhaustion gives forgetting, at least for a short time

And the pursued is saved

In darkness until morning

The cloak protects him does —

All mean things undone and all debts erased

In no man's land, where today no longer reigns and where tomorrow does not rule

Where the wiser reaches his goal, the unattainable

If the oppressed find refuge, the intolerable becomes easy for them

Sleep mercifully heals all wounds

Takes all the load for a couple of hours

which rests heavily on our shoulders —
