Daß die Sonne sich verdunkelt, hatte man schon oft gesehen

Daß die Vögel nicht mehr flogen, war vielleicht noch zu verstehn

Daß es plötzlich kälter wurde, lag gewiß am Abendlicht;

Doch das dumpfe Beben, das näher kam, verstand man einfach nicht

Man verkroch sich in den Häusern, niemand schlief in dieser Nacht

Nur die Kinder wurden eilig mit einem Trunk zur Ruh gebracht

Doch man hatte eins vergessen, und als keine Zeit mehr blieb

Hörte man es singen am Straßenrand, und es sang sein Lieblingslied

Riesen sind nur halb so groß, sind ja lange Zwerge bloß

Riesen haben Riesenangst, wenn man ihnen auf der Nase tanzt

Da erzitterte die Erde, und es zog ein Sturm herauf

Und die Menschen in den Häusern gaben alle Hoffnung auf

Dieses Kind war längst verloren.

Das war nun für alle klar

Denn es ahnte niemand in der Not, was da draußen geschehen war

Und dann trat er aus den Wäldern, der gefürchtete Gigant

Einen Baum von hundert Jahren knickte er mit einer Hand

Und er sah das kleine Wesen, das ihn nicht zu fürchten schien

Langsam kniete er sich zu dem Kind (hinab) und es sang sein Lied für ihn

Riesen sind nur halb so groß, sind ja lange Zwerge bloß

Riesen haben Riesenangst, wenn man ihnen auf der Nase tanzt

One had often seen that the sun darkened

It was perhaps understandable that the birds no longer flew

The fact that it suddenly got colder was certainly due to the evening light;

But you just couldn't understand the dull tremor that was coming closer

One hid in the houses, nobody slept that night

Only the children were hastily brought to rest with a drink

But one had forgotten one thing, and when there was no more time

You could hear it singing on the side of the road, and it was singing its favorite song

Giants are only half as tall, long dwarfs are just that

Giants are terrified if you dance on their noses

Then the earth trembled and a storm came up

And the people in the houses gave up all hope

This child was long lost.

That was now clear to everyone

Because nobody in the emergency suspected what had happened out there

And then he stepped out of the woods, the dreaded giant

He snapped a hundred year old tree with one hand

And he saw the little creature that didn't seem to fear him

He slowly knelt down to the child and it sang his song for him
