Above and Beyond -

The air was cold and damp when I took my first breath

Alone and shivering, I knew the lure of death

The cave was black and held me prisoner in its shade

My hands were bound and I was afraid

I left that place before the savage dark could infiltrate my core

Emerging, I found the sun

And in its brilliant majesty, I felt a power I couldn’t ignore

I liked it and I wanted more

Overcome my ancestry to rise above

For centuries I slaved, an enterprise of one

I built a tower to eclipse the glorious sun

The more I climbed, the more my doubts began to grow

Now I’m so high that I can’t see the earth below

The empire I had forged was wrought in arrogance and doomed to fall

Malicious, a paradox

But even in the wake of fallacy, I tread the line upon

The verge of eternal equinox
