«Well met, well met,» said my own true love

Well met, well met," cried he

«I've just returned from the salt, salt sea

And all for the love of thee.»

«I could have married the King’s daughter dear

And she would have married me

But I have forsaken her crowns of gold and store

All for the love of thee.»

«Oh, will you forsake your house carpenter

And go along with me?

I’ll take you to where the grass grows green

To the banks of the salt sea.»

She picked up her little babe

Kisses gave him three

Said «Stay right here with my house carpenter

And keep him good company.»

Well, they’d not been gone but about two weeks

I knew it was not three

When this fair lady began to weep and moan

And she wept most bitterly

Are you weeping for your silver and gold

Are you weeping for your store?

Or are you weeping for your house carpenter

That you never shall see no more

«A curse, a curse to the sailor,» she cried

«A curse, a curse,» she swore

«You robbed me of my darlin' little babe

«That I shall never see no more.»

They had not been on the ship three weeks

I’m sure it was not four

When there came a leak in the bottom of the ship

And sank them for to rise no more
