Totenschimmel - Morgenstern

Ich sah ein Pferd so weiss wie Schnee

So schön und stark und weiss wie Schnee

In jener kalten Winternacht

Die der Mond so hell gemacht

So blieb ich auf dem Flecke stehen

Um das Tier mir anzusehen

Da trat der schlimmste aller Träume

Aus dem Schatten kahler Bäume

Eingehüllt in schwarzen Samt

Mit seiner Sense in der Hand

Ging der bleiche Knochenmann

An das weisse Ross heran

Die bleiche Hand griff sich die Zügel

Der Knochenfuss stieg in den Bügel

Auf dem Pferd sitzt das Gerippe

Grausam glänzt die Sensenklinge

Vor Entsetzen lief ich fort

Fort von diesem schlimmen Ort

Hörte dann am frühen Morgen

In dem Dorf die Totenglocken

So I stayed where I was

To look at the animal

Then came the worst of all dreams

From the shade of bare trees

Wrapped in black velvet

With his scythe in hand

Went the pale skeleton

Approach the white horse

The pale hand grabbed the reins

The bony foot climbed into the stirrup

The skeleton sits on the horse

The scythe blade glistens cruelly

I ran away in horror

Away from this bad place

Then heard early in the morning

In the village the death knells
