Little one, moccasin flower

Fragrant and beautiful, just nodding in the breeze

You’re a sacred gift, like precious berries

Full of life and color, love and joy and peace

Little one, a wren that’s singing

As she makes her nest where the pretty cattails bloom

My little one, there’s so much you need to know

And my little Waabooz, there is much I learn from you

Little one, I would shelter you and protect you from the storm

But little one, you must learn how to make it on your own

Little one, a cub asleep in the sun

Grown-up days are coming, oh they’re coming much too soon

So little one, just like the birch tree

You must learn to bend so the wind won’t break you

My little one, I give to you everything I have to give

My little one, I give it all to you so that you will live.

Little one, there’ll be times of pain

But some days will warm you with joy and hope and love

Just remember all that I taught you

Do your best and trust the Sacred One Above
