Well I was born across the water, born a son and not a daughter

One cold day in 1953

In my early recollections, ain’t no kind words of affection

Just the sound of daddy’s hand slappin' me

So I grew up fast and hard and somewhat bitter

As kids will do when they’ve been knocked around

And of the many things I am, hell I’m no quitter

Cause I got back up each time he knocked me down

Oh and I can’t blame him none

For anything he done

Cause he was doin' what his bible told him to

Now to change my wild behavior

He was praying to his savior

While I was doin' what the hell I wanted to

And as a boy I was ambitious and them girls all looked delicious

And I tasted every one that I could find

But my momma was a teacher and my dad a Baptist preacher

And he never spared the rod on my behind

Yeah but I can’t blame him none

For anything he done

And my brother sat there cryin'

I was lost in some old childhood scene

Where my daddy was a sayin'
