А день угасал, виноватый

В печали глубокой,

Когда угрожали сосватать Бога.

Покоем обмануты ставни —

Эй, не зевай, сны стреножь.

Как покорный слуга

Закатал рукав,

Вековечить нож

Стародавним.

Кто волосы смял в узел черный,

Оврагами рыскал,

Кто заводи вырезал челном

В брызги.

Запекся в уста серым волком —

Эй, кто очаг засмеял?

Я в разбой прокажен,

Бросил верных жен, —

Не зови меня

Ночью волглой.

В полки пропадать становитесь,

Отвагой согреты;

Живым обещал горе-витязь, лето.

Имен не упомнить пожары,

Чьи возгласы теплил;

Кого наудачу прощали, степью.

И так далеко Забайкалье

В ладони пророчит

И моет полуденной гарью, очи.
