I can still recall that call telling me to come home

I knew right then that the end wouldn’t be long

So I packed my bags and I got my ass on the first thing headed down the road

Praying to God not to rob this world of Lucille’s soul

I guess the stress of years of pain finally taken its toll

And I suppose none of us know when its our time to go

But I know that time wasn’t on my side when that ride took much too long

Cause all I heard when my feet hit the curb was 'Lucille's gone'

Jesus, Joseph, Mary and Moses… even Deacon James

I’ve come today to pray that you save Lucille in our father’s name

The Lord never heard a word as true as what I’m bout to say

Don’t let her die before she wakes and my soul is yours to take

It’s been some years and that’s the last I don seen of the south

Ain’t no reason for keeping Mississippi in my heart now

When my god mama died, I cried but I won’t shed no mo tears
