From my dreams I’m torn

Awoken by the sound of screams

So I spring forth

Smoke covered the ceiling

Scorching my lungs

So I crawled along the floor

Leaving behind all I own

Only once realized I was safe

I also realized that I was alone

It was now too late

To go back in

I felt helpless as I watched my room burn

My companion did not make it outside the shelter

Hiding under my bed

I know in his final moments he was terrified

The moment that I realized I had failed him

Will forever haunt me

I had lost everything

But those things did not matter to me

Self-preservation

Became my priority

You never know how you’ll think

Until the moment comes when you must decide

And weight the value of your life
