Huckup - Firtan

Schwärze durchdringt die Waldesnacht

Laut und groll der Donner kracht

Ein Schrecken durch den Groll erwacht

Ein Vagabund zieht durch die Nacht

Winde säuseln durch die Bäume

Erzählen von des Wanderers Träumen

Der Huckup flüstert vor sich hin

Verwarnt den jungen Sonderling!

«Wand'rer, lass die Beute stehn

Sonst lässt der Hockauf dich nicht gehen

Der Hockauf ist ein starker Wicht

Hält mit den Dieben gar bös Gericht!»

Der Wanderer greift dennoch zu

Der Wiedergänger steigt ihm nach:

«Verhext seist du, nun rast' und ruh!»

Kaltes Grauen packt den Leib

Schatten stiehlt sich durchs Dickicht

Hockauf, Hockauf Kreatur der Nacht

Nimm dem Dieb sein Lebenslicht

Der Sündiger nun lahm und steif

Der Hockauf krallt den Lebensschweif

Atem wird zur Todesqual

Der letzte Hauch schmeckt fahl und schal

Blackness penetrates the forest night

Loud and rumbling the thunder cracks

A terror awakened by the resentment

A vagabond wanders through the night

Winds whisper through the trees

Narrating the Wanderer's Dreams

The huckup whispers to itself

Warn the young nerd!

«Wanderer, leave the booty where it is

Otherwise the Hockauf won't let you go

The Hockauf is a strong minion

Holds bad judgment on the thieves!»

The hiker grabs it anyway

The revenant follows him:

"Bewitched you, now rest and rest!"

Cold horror grips the body

Shade steals through the thicket

Hockup, hockup Creature of the night

Take the thief's light of life

The sinner now lame and stiff

The hiccup claws the tail of life

Breath becomes agony

The last breath tastes pale and stale
