Abbiamo avuto tempi in cui

Quei rami di agrifoglio

Vestivano quaderni e pensierini

Mentre l’albero già spoglio di cartone e cellophane

Si colorava a festa

Per attendere la visita del prete

Poi le luci intermittenti

Come i nostri più segreti sentimenti

Ed eravamo tanti

Amici coi parenti

Vicini e conoscenti

Che non ci sono più…

Abbiamo avuto tempi

Con il vischio sulla porta

Tovaglie rosse e luci di candela

C’era sempre una signora

Che non si sposava mai

Torrone nella cesta

Telefonate giunte da lontano

Con gli auguri da Piacenza

Ed il panettone stava sopra la credenza

In quella grande stanza

Tra quella confidenza

E c’era una presenza

Che non ritrovo più…

Those holly branches

They wore notebooks and little thoughts

While the tree already stripped of cardboard and cellophane

It was colored in celebration

To await the visit of the priest

Then the flashing lights

Like our most secret feelings

And we were many

Friends with relatives

Neighbors and acquaintances

That are no more ...

We had times

With mistletoe on the door

Red tablecloths and candle lights

There was always a lady

That she never got married

Nougat in the basket

Phone calls coming from afar

With best wishes from Piacenza

And the panettone was on the sideboard

In that big room

Between that confidence

And there was a presence

That I no longer find ...
