He sits on the back of his pickup,

looking out at the fields that he’s sown

Proud of the worh he’s accomplished

and all of the rows he’s hoed.

They say it’s not hard bein' a farmer

with a wife and kids by your side.

But Mae died in an Oklahoma bombing

and his son in Afghanistan.

She works in a factory in Georgia,

drives home to East Tennessee,

just to put food on the table

and shoes on her baby’s feet.

She used to dream of bein' a cowgirl,

just like the ones you see on TV,

but she let it all fade like the pictures

that she hides from her memories.

So go on and buy you a big house

with two cars and a big nice garage.

And think of all of these people

whose American dream was a lie.

He was injured in a local steam plant.

Now he wanders the house all day.

Not really sure of his purpose.

It’s hard livin' on Workman’s Comp pay.

His wife died due to lack of insurance.

They lost their American dream.

They say he should really be thankful

the TVA sees to all of his needs

My buddy who lives up in Boston

had a wife who lost her leg in a race.

She was gettin' close to the finish

when her dreams blew up in her face.

They lost their house in the suburbs,

now they’re livin' under a bridge.

He spins a sign for a local tax company.

Puttin' money in Uncle Sam’s plate.

This American dream that they promised

didn’t turn out so good for this man.
