Nicht mehr begreifen kann ich der Winde Streit:

Denn eine Woge wälzt sich von hier heran

Von dort die andre.

Wir inmitten treiben im Sturme

Auf schwarzem Schiffe

Das Ungewitter bracht' uns in Todesnot

Schon schlagen Wellen hoch über Bord und Deck

Durchlöchert ist das ganze Segel

Fetzen nur flattern von ihm im Winde

Die Anker halten nicht…

Und bricht die Sturzsee über das Schiff, so schwand

Ihm jede Lust am Kampfe mit Sturm und Meer:

Man meint, die Klippe in der Tiefe

Schlägt es bald leck und zerbricht’s in Trümmer

In solchem Seesturm treibt unser Schiff dahin

I can no longer comprehend the quarrel of the winds:

Because a wave is rolling in from here

From there the other.

We drift in the midst of the storm

On black ships

The storm brought us into mortal distress

Waves are already beating high over board and deck

The whole sail is perforated

Shreds only flutter from him in the wind

The anchors don't hold...

And if the torrential sea breaks over the ship, then vanishes

Him every desire to fight with storm and sea:

One thinks the cliff in the depths

It soon leaks and breaks into pieces

In such a sea storm our ship drifts along
