Pendant des années j’ai senti

En m’en retournant sur Paris

Juste après le péage

Comme une odeur de bois coupé

Un parfum de sève échappée

Familière et sauvage

Je la guettais, fugitive

De ma voiture captive

Mes narines frémissaient

Tandis que m’envahissait

Un bonheur incompréhensible

Comme un souvenir impossible

D’une autre vie, comme un regret

Ou la prescience d’un après

Où ça sentirait la résine

La planche qu’on a rabotée

La fougère et le noisetier

Moi qui suis pourtant citadine

Et même si j’ai tout mon temps

Je sais qu’une forêt m’attend

On peut croire qu’on a rêvé

Dire qu’il n’est rien arrivé

Qu’on s’est fait des idées

Une odeur, c’est bien imprécis

Et pourquoi cette odeur, ici

Sur la route bondée?

De rechercher cette place

Craignant de ne rien trouver

Qui puisse justifier

Ce bonheur incompréhensible

Comme un sourire irrépressible

Ou comme l’ineffable joie

Qu’on éprouve à rentrer chez soi

Où l’on n’aurait qu'à se poser

Dans un fauteuil se reposer

Où l’on n’aurait plus à se battre

La semaine dernière

Je m’en retournais sur Paris

Et j’avais assis deux petits

Sur la banquette arrière

Ils regardaient des images

Ont soudain levé le front

Et déclaré «Ça sent bon !»

C’est sans doute incompréhensible

Je dois avoir le cœur sensible

Mais j’en ai eu les larmes aux yeux

Je n’avais pas rêvé ce lieu

Il existait, il est à prendre

Il suffit de suivre l’odeur
